Annual Chris Bowser Wheelin Sportsman Hunt
Through the combined efforts of the Terrace Mountain Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), the Corps of Engineers, and a multitude of volunteers, the Chris Bowser Wheelin Sportsman Hunt is held annually at Raystown Lake. The event, designed to provide hunting opportunities and enjoyment of the great outdoors to disabled hunters is always a tremendous success. To date nearly 75 hunters have harvest over 110 deer. Although held on the last day of deer seasons, the volunteers have generously donated their time and gave up what may have been their last opportunity to harvest a deer to help others. The volunteers fulfill a wide variety of tasks; some assisted hunters at their blinds and some helped to drive the deer, while others prepared a delicious lunch for all to enjoy. The reward for their efforts came from the smiles and many thanks of the hunters. All participating hunters received a DMAP (Deer Management Assistance Program) tag, which allowed them to take an additional antlerless deer on the enrolled federal land. The Terrace Mountain Chapter of the NWTF has received numerous awards at the NWTF State Chapter Meeting for hosting the Best Wheelin' Sportsman Event in Pennsylvania. The Wheelin' Sportsman Committee for the Chapter includes Chairpersons Tara Whitsel and Frank Lane who can be reached at 814-658-6811.
Plans for a hunt next year are already in progress and is currently scheduled for the second Saturday in December. The Event is named for Chris Bowser, the founder of the Event, who has recovered from a spinal cord injury and rededicated his career to natural resources work. Chris fought through recovery and received a degree in Wildlife Sciences and is now a Federal Wildlife Biologist with USDA, Wildlife Services. During his professional tenure at Raystown Lake, Chris worked endlessly to develop and implement the Annual Wheelin Sportsman Hunt at Raystown Lake.

Further information regarding the Wheelin Sportsman can be obtained from the National Wild Turkey Federation or the staff of Raystown Lake at 814-658-6811.
