How Can You Help

The Natural Resources Stewardship at Raystown Lake welcomes anyone who wishes to assist in protecting this valuable natural resources. The Natural Resources Stewardship at Raystown Lake welcomes anyone who wishes to assist in protecting this valuable natural resources.  The following describes some options to assist the rapidly developing and exciting natural resource program at Raystown.  All volunteers must sign up for the Corps Volunteer Program. Please call Wildlife Biologist Jeff Krause at 814-658-6813 for further information.

Volunteers - Volunteers including individuals, scout groups, high school or college classes are welcome to assist in habitat projects at the Lake.  Each spring the Corps plants hundreds of trees and instructors may elect to provide credit to students who participate.

Groups - Conservation groups who are looking to provide community service can provide an excellent service to the natural resource stewardship of Raystown Lake.  Group projects may include tree maintenance, wildlife surveys, plantings or stream habitat work.

AmeriCorps - The AmeriCorps administered through the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps provides members with a living stipend, insurance and education award to work at sponsor locations.  Raystown Lake has had two AmeriCorps members that have served as foresters and GIS specialist.  For more information check out the AmeriCorps partners page.

Internships and Externships - Each year the Corps will evaluate potential internships to be conducted at Raystown Lake.  Although some internships may be paid under the Seasonal Park Ranger Positions, other non-paid internships may also be conducted which provide a valuable learning experience to students.

Student Conservation Corps  - The Corps of Engineers recently signed an agreement in 2002 to permit the Corps to use federal funding to cost-share the SCA program.  The program has not been used at Raystown, but future opportunities at Raystown or other Corps Lakes may exist. The following describes some of the programs.

SCA Conservation Internships - SCA recruits and fields college students and other adults for positions ranging from three months to one year. Projects can range from traditional resource management projects to restoration, GIS and computer-related work, wildlife research, environmental education, and interpretation and visitor center staffing.

SCA Diversity Internships are specifically targeted to ethnically diverse constituents, women, and people with disabilities who are traditionally under-represented in the conservation field.

SCA Conservation Crews - Each summer, SCA places crews of six to eight high school students with two highly experienced crew leaders for one month to perform labor intensive work such as trail construction, maintenance, and ecological restoration.
