For the sum of $20.00 the government of the United States, through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, may agree to sell 1 ½  cords (3 pick-up loads) of fuel wood from dead/downed timber or designated live standing timber located in designated areas at the Raystown Lake Project under the following conditions:

This permit permits the removal of any dead/downed timber project wide or live standing timber in designated locations across the project.  The designated live tree firewood cutting areas will have a “Firewood Cutting Area” sign posted, the perimeter marked in pink ribbon, and designated trees for harvest will be marked with a yellow slash.  Permit availability will be based on the amount of fuel wood available behind each gate.  Cutting fuel wood at other project locations is prohibited unless authorized by Operations Manager.

    • Vehicles are NOT permitted off of designated roads, and only those roads open to vehicular traffic are to be used.  Use of old woods roads or skid roads is prohibited without specific written permission by the Operations Manager. Vehicles are not permitted on service roads behind wooden gates.  Fuel wood should be removed from its location to permit holders vehicle by hand carrying only.
    • No cutting is permitted in any active or inactive timber sale areas unless approved in writing on the permit.
    • A valid fuel wood permit and proper identification must be carried when cutting and gathering firewood.
    • Precautions will be taken to avoid damage to trees not designated for salvage. Purchaser will be held responsible for unnecessary damage to live trees, shrubs, and road structures.
    • All brush and tops must be moved back at least 25 feet from all roadways, lopped, and scattered.  Ditches must be cleaned of all debris. All stumps must be cut as close to the ground as possible (< 1ft).
    • This permit is non-transferable and must be shown to the Operations Manager, Forester, or Park Ranger upon request.
    • The fuel wood purchased under this permit is for personal use and not for resale.
    • A fuel wood permit is valid for (30) days. There are no extensions or refunds if fuel wood is not collected. A new permit may be issued pending availability of fuel wood. 
    • A security deposit of $50.00 cash must be provided to receive a gate key for use during the 30 days of the fuel wood permit.  Gate key must be returned within two (2) days of the permit expiration date. Gate key is not to be used for any other purpose (e.g. hunting, fishing, etc.).
    • Littering is prohibited and violators will be prosecuted.
    • The permittee shall be subject to the Rules and Regulations established by Title 36 CFR, Part 327.
    • The United States of America will not be held responsible for damages to private property or for injuries to persons which may arise from the cutting of fuel wood, and the purchaser shall hold the United States harmless from any and all such claims arising out of this agreement. 
    • Future sale of fuel wood may be refused if any of the above conditions are violated.  All designated fuel wood areas are patrolled by Raystown Lake staff.  For violations to conditions within this policy, a revocation of the fuel wood permit and/or fines up to $500.00 may be issued.
